I bought a cavalier a few back from Arnold Clark
Rover (next to the new motor point) I paid £4500 and
though at the time this was a good price as it
included the free insurance. About 2 months later I
crashed the car and it was written off. This is when
things started going down hill. My insurance company
(also Arnold Clark) only offered me £2300 pounds for
the car, a car I had paid £4500 2 months earlier.
According to them this was all the car was worth.
After many phone calls I was offered nothing more and
basically told to go away. After a long time of
complaining I bit the bullet and gave up, I had to
take a loan big enough to pay off the remaining
finance and to buy a new car.
More than 4 years later I'm just getting out the hole
that Arnold Clark put me in.
Every person I have spoke to who are looking for a car
I do my best to put them off going anyway near Arnold
Clark and the way I see it I have cost them a lot of
business over the past few years, and I will continue
to talk people out of going anyway near them. 5.6.2003

Purchased a Vauxhall Zafira 1.6 Club from Arnold Clark, Pollokshaws Road,
Glasgow today.
It was supposed to be a 2003.5 model year (MY), but the specs make it clear that
the vehicle is a 2003 MY. Vauxhall are discounting 2003 MYs by an extra £1,005
over the 2003.5 MY. Twice I asked the salesman to confirm the vehicle to be
purchased was a 2003.5 MY, and twice he said yes.
Should be an interesting conversation tomorrow! 5.6.2003

I bought my first car from Arnold Clark on finance about 13 months ago. My
extended (piece of shit) warranty covered about as much of my car as Arnold
Clark are a fabulous company to deal with (not much). After being told that if I
had a problem with the car I could put it in to get it fixed at no cost to
myself when it failed to start one day I put it in. Long story short cost me 25
quid. Bought 1000 quid alloys and wheels from independent retailer, 6000 miles
later NO tread left on front tyres, rear ones perfect. Put car in to check
tracking etc etc, long story short 46 quid down and 200 quid for 2 new tyres.
Got three punctures on different tyres in space of one week ( probably just bad
luck ). Rear right wheel was replaced with spare tyre and broke thread on one
wheel nut. Cost 260 quid to replace rear hub. Left country to go help the war
effort in Kuwait for three months, g/f picked up my car and found within 1/4
mile from showroom (Phoenix, Paisley) exhaust was knackered!
d. G/f returns and parks outside. Gentleman accompanies her outside, revs engine
three times and says exhaust is broken in two places without checking rear or
underneath car. Quote 270 quid to repair. Gets a local garage (absolutely
superb) to pick my car up, fix the battery and the brakes (car not moved for 3
months) replace dodgy exhaust and put it through its MOT... wait for it 250
all-in! My conclusion, don't touch Arnold Clark with a barge-pole, unless you
can prove they've damaged your motor you're screwed, trading standards said the
same and unfortunately I am going to embark on my own little crusade to get my
own back on Arnold Clark. They WILL be sorry for screwing me over, and the
funniest thing is... I'm about to buy a brand-new Vauxhall VX220 Turbo for
around 24,500 pounds, will pay cash and I'm not gonna give it to them if they
were the last dealership on earth. I'd sooner crawl over broken glass to any
future destination than deal with them again. The exhaust b!
two was only broken in one place: it passed its MOT after all with only 1 section
being repaired. As you can imagine not really a great deal of money concerned,
but it's about being right and being wrong. About 800 quid out, but I'm not
bitter really. The funniest thing was after a short meeting with the service
manager and a threat to call in trading standards, I asked who I should say to
contact to which he replied" they know me well they'll know who to speak to!" As
you can imagine not filling me with any more confidence, and as it was dwindling
fast to begin with it fell through the floor with that remark. Love the site,
love the idea and please don't be offended if I advertise your website to other
disgruntled AC customers. 6.6.2003


Hi I'm an ex-employee & this isn't really sour grapes. I have worked for big &
small companies but the shear brass neckedness (hope this is a word) is
astounding. I have worked in the motor trade as after sales personnel for over a
decade & have seen some shady stuff but Arnold Clark Honda takes the biscuit!
Mr Agnew calls in for a price of a 27,000 on a accord we quote £320 -10% since
he bought the car from us. He then calls 3 other Honda franchises inc another
Arnold Clark @ the other end of the country to be quoted £240.He returns & asks
why the massive difference?. Being new I'm fairly shocked myself & start
investigating, now taking into consideration different labour rates, oil prices we
are still £50 dearer. I really can't understand it so i call another franchise &
ask why their so cheap. The official book time for this service is 2.4 hrs WE
WERE CHARGING 3.2 hrs - (0.8) x£58.75 off a difference....  WHY...?
Reason i was told "we have to wash their car"
"WASH THEIR CAR!!!!"  my jaw dropped  £47 to wash a car????

yes apparently "One of the groups most profitable franchises was adding labour
time on to the official book time to allow for a basic service of washing"
I understand that their are pressures on all motor-trade staff to produce
profits or face demotion or even side-movement, but i draw the line where
customers are ripped of for a service they are not getting.7.6.2003

Hi there,
I bought a VW Bora from AC Helensburgh 18 months ago. Was told that the service
books etc would be sent on to me as they were still in their head office - head
office must be on Mars as I have not yet received the books, despite constantly
requesting them.
I was also told that the car had never been involved in an accident. My wife
recently had an accident where someone clobbered the back of her. Put the car in
for repair to a local guy - he told me there had been extensive panel
repair/replacement to the drivers front - so much for AC honesty. Aye right. 8.6.2003

I bought a Saxo 1.1 east coast from glasgow, when my son tried to put in new
speakers for a beat box we found that all the electric wiring was exposing bare
wires which means that he had been driving around in an absolute death trap,
where was the 41 point check ????
I spoke to Arnold Clarks and they were not interested because we had owned the
car by this time for about 10 weeks.  8.6.2003


Ahhh, an outlet for my 'Arnold Rage'!  I bought a car earlier this year from
Alexandra Parade branch and was shocked at the cowboy tactics for such a big
organisation. The sales staff seemed really amateurish and when I started
quizzing one of them about him giving me the wrong rate of APR his reply was
that 'he didn't know what I meant, they don't really deal with any of that
interest stuff', I suggest that they learn. 
I always check the tyres on a car before purchasing to help confirm mileage.
When I picked up the car, the two new Dunlop tyres which were on the rear of the
car when I test-drove it had been swapped with cheapo brand tyres.  This is
apparently rife at AC, where they swap tyres around on cars (even after they
have been sold!) to disguise true mileages. They didn't even clean the inside of
the car after making me wait a week for them to 'prepare the car'.
I have also discovered that although they advertise 'fixed price servicing, when
I rang 3 different AC branches (all Nissan franchise), I got three completely
different prices. After-sales simply does not exist. I took my dad's car to
Mosspark to re-programme one of the keys as it wouldn't disable the immobiliser,
i was told this was a half-hour job, 5 hours later they had rendered both keys
useless by locking the immobiliser forcing me to take a courtesy car home and
come back the next day, and not even a sorry! 
I will NEVER go back to Arnold Clark for a car, service or so much as some
touch-up paint, all they care about is getting as much of your money for as
little effort as possible.9.6.2003

I was put of buying my wee sisters first car from Arnie, by a salesman who has
worked with them for years, he told me about the interest free gimmick.
Local garage does very well with this advert in their window.
4 years interest free £29 per week = £6032 + deposit
Our price £4995
It was true, I checked two of the local Arnold garages, one of them actually had
two similar cars at £1200 of a difference between them on the same forecourt,
obviously the 4 year interest free one was the most expensive DOH!
According to my mate it will soon be one big McHargs anyway, (that'll be a lot
worse) when the old fella pops his clogs, it has already turned into one, they
just haven't changed the name yet, some legacy he thinks he's leaving. 9.6.2003
