Still in a battle with Arnold Clark and my solicitor since May and trying to put
car back as breach of contract. Bought a Peugeot 206 from Tollcross Edinburgh
branch cause my local branch weren't helpful. Took them 17 days to deliver it,
due to them losing it in Glasgow somewhere, only to find out that it was a
contract hire car for 3 years for themselves. I got it after many phone calls
but the car had done over 2300 miles since paying the deposit. They said there
was a mistake and I was wrong. I had no MOT or warranty pack up until end of
June and still now only have 1 key. The Salesman lied to me, told me that their
finance was flexible and if i paid more in every month I would have less
interest to pay. I agreed. The finance company told me after that only if you
pay the whole amount early would i qualify for less interest. 10 days after
receiving it the power steering failed and it was towed away. When warranty
receipt came in, the mileage was what i had said, but they !
still won't accept this. I was offered £125 compensation this week and now feel
that i have to give up. I now tell everyone what i have been through in hope
they don't make the same mistake in buying a car from Arnold Clark. 15.9.2003

This is a great site, it is nice to know that when I was treated badly by Arnold Clark it was not personal, it is just the way they do business. I found out about a security issue on the internet concerning my Golf TDI discovered by BBC Watchdog. It said that anyone with a screwdriver could gain access in seconds, opening all windows and doors and disarming the alarm. Since I had paid a lot of money to have smash proof glass fitted this did not cheer me up. The solution advised on the internet was to delock the doors with parts ordered from VW. I ordered the parts from Arnold Clark on the Monday and the parts arrived on the Thursday. So far so good, the problem began when I asked for a quote for the fitting of the parts which I had already bought, The service manager ( I use the term very lightly) said the problem I was worried about didn't exist. I said I still wanted the parts fitted and that I thought I shouldn't even have had to find out about this on the internet or pay to have it fixed as it was a fault rectified on newer models by VW, mine is only 3 years old. He immediately quoted me EIGHTY POUNDS, labour only remember. So I told him that was ridiculous and that I wouldn't be back. I went home and although I am no mechanic , with the help of the Mark IV owners web page, fitted the parts in 6 MINUTES, by my reckoning that is 13 pounds a minute labour Arnold Clark was going to charge me. Shocked by how easy and short the job had been I phoned to complain and unfortunately was put through to the same employee I had just spoken to in the dealership. I asked him for an explanation and he said that his mechanics would not only have fitted the parts but checked everything was working on the door as well, I pointed out that I had also done that by just pressing the relevant buttons. I then said, "What way is that to treat a customer?" and he said, "You are NOT A CUSTOMER." I then said I would write to VW UK about this attempted rip-off and he said," Go ahead I don't work for VW, I work for ARNOLD CLARK!" When I again said that I shouldn't have had to find out about this all for myself he changed his previous tune and said the information was readily available by visiting the showroom, fine if you happen to already know about the problem and if you don't meet the service manager who denies said problem exists. As Arnie nearly said, " I'll NOT be back!" 15.9.2003
Great site! Thanks for helping me let off steam, I have already sent my story in.
There is some satisfaction in knowing you are not alone, as I was really angry
after dealing with Arnold Clark, Crow Rd. and even tried e-mailing Mike
Rutherford at Talk Sport, but the site was having problems. My story was not
even as bad as most on your site, but still had me seething with frustration.
Please try and get your site on Watchdog or at least the Press. You are
providing a great service.. 15.9.2003

We bought a car new from Arnold Clarke in 2001, since then it has never been out the Garage. Recently the car has been in for new suspension and a rear axel just to add to the many problems we have had with our Saxo.
The manager at Arnold Clarke in Armadale has said to us that he has had enough of us complaining about our car and does not want to see us or our car in the garage again.
This problem has been going on for the last two years.
We would not recommend this garage to anyone because their after sales sucks and there customer service is very poor.15.9.2003

I bought my car from AC in march of this year on finance, the car itself is
fine, my first car and i love it! The problem i have had is that when i bought
it they asked me the cheapest insurance quote i got and agreed to match it. I am
21 years old and they sold me a policy at 250 excess which matched my best
quote. Unfortunately i crashed my baby into a van and since found that my excess
is in fact 400. They have advised me that this is because i am a 'young
driver'. My argument is that i was not going to turn 25 before the policy
expired so why not inform me that my excess was in fact 400? Lovely! Rest
assured it is a matter of principle to me and I intend to fight them to the
bitter end! Nice to know I'm not alone,  15.9.2003

I'm on my 5 Renault Clio. The last one was purchased from Arnold Clark Paisley.
At purchase (new) delivery date was to be on my birthday 2 weeks later still
not available as the person that could road tax it was away on holiday. Car
received on 25th of month with 6 months road tax although when ordered were
assured would have 12 months tax. Also purchased 2 years servicing to save any
hastle. Last year when put in for service specifically asked them to check the
breaks as grinding noise (common problem is built up of grit in wintertime). A
few weeks later I had to do an emergency stop as driver in front halted their
car. My car didn't stop brakes had failed due to built up to grit. I needed a
new front end. Comment from Arnold Clark mechanic was ' Yes we opened up brakes
noticed some build up and closed' In other words hadn't bothered to do
anything. If I had been on motorway and had braked I would probably not be
writing this as the accident happened when I was!
doing 20 mph. Whilst car was in being fixed had numerous conflicting stories 1
Car was being worked on in Paisley 2. Had been taken to a body shop. I had
hired a car from Arnold Clark in the meantime. Only for it to be discovered 20
days later car was still sitting in Paisley with no work having been carried
out. Meantime I'm paying £119 per week car hire! Staff completely unhelpful and
rude. Unable to give completion date, lying about whereabouts of car parts
ordered etc. I love my Clio but I will never buy another car from Arnold Clark
and if anyone gets work done would recommend get it checked independently. 15.9.2003
