Thanks for the warning. I was looking to buy a new car from them and came
across your site. I ain't buying from them now. At least you know you've stopped
at least one potential customer - hope you stop loads more if that's how they
'care' for you. I'll keep looking - elsewhere. Thanks again. 18.10.2003

I haven't got as far as buying a car from them, as the service from their sales
team is so poor.
I've got £20K to spend on a new car, but because I wear jeans at the weekend I
have had 3 dealers ONLY talk about used cars and one suggested 'it may be a
little rich for me 20.10.2003

Arnold Clark has lost the plot and needs to retire. He does not recognise his staff and
cannot differentiate between Wigan and Warrington. 17 years service counts for
F.A in his organisation. Crash and Burn, Rot in Pieces.

I was in the process of buying a car from Arnold Clark (East Kilbride) Renault
Clio Alize 1.4 16v reg W173 LHN Cost £4288. Got it checked by my uncle who works
in a garage and knows what to look out for, he advised me it needed a new cat
fitted to the exhaust, handbrake looked at as it moved side to side and two
headlights had condensation inside the lenses, so i notified the salesman about
this.

The car had been brought from the Greenock branch and now they say it has to be
returned to Greenock as the (EK) store say they are not prepared to fix the
problems as it could cost them over £600.
I hope if the car is returned to Greenock or sold at the EK store they fix the
car before putting it up for sale again.

I feel its unfair of any Arnold Clark store to attempt to sell a used car as
they must know about the problems beforehand (maybe hoping for someone who
doesn't know much about cars to come along) Your guess is as good as mine. 22.10.2003

Dear Arnold sucks,

I bought a Toyota second hand not from Arnold Clark, but when I required parts for it, I contacted Arnold Clark parts dept and as it was all matter of a fact on the phone I did not hold out any hope for the correct parts to arrive.

They said I would have the parts 2 days later, so I booked my car in to be re MOT’d at the other garage not Arnold Clark on the day the parts were due to arrive. Low and behold the wrong parts arrived, I challenged the guy at the parts dept as to why this was and all he said was he was sorry. I explained that the car was now a VOR (Vehicle off road) and he said as that was the case he could have the correct part for the next day.

I am now in a situation that my car cannot be MOT’d until a day later, my wife has to get 2 buses to work and the other garage has to book the car in a day later. 23.10.2003

Took out service for 2 year and vehicle replacement insurance over 2 months ago,
paid via switch and still have not received anything from them. Have phoned on
several occasions only being told that I will be called back - still waiting.
Also still waiting on various documents from buying my like (service book, aa
cover etc) and that is since March - usual excuse waiting for the info to come
in 23.10.2003

I bought a s reg rover from Arnold Clark in Inverness at the end of March this
year by the end of June this year the cylinder head gasket went in it i have
been trying to fight for them to fix it i have had to pay £300 on two AA reports
so far and they have a list of faults that is not handy my car has been off the
road since and i am still paying for it my car cost four grand and i feel that
if you pay that amount of money you should be able to get more than eight weeks
out off it i think your site hits the nail on the head about this company i
would love to name and shame them myself 24.10.2003

What a great site, I'm not planning on buying a car, i came across your site while doing a job search for a career change. I have been in the motor trade for 12 years. If i had been planning on buying a car you can be rest assured it WILL NOT be from Arnie.

I did apply for a job from Arnie, as i was looking for a change from Skye to Glasgow, the interview incurred a lot of personal expense on me and i was told i would be got back to in no time whatsoever. 2 months later i was still waiting for a response, when i phoned no persons were available. I eventually got a reply in the mail "Due to the high caliber of candidates your application has been unsuccessful", hey, i even got 2 letters the same in one day. I had turned down job offers from other people because i was sure that this job was for me, Parts Manager, Parkhall, Clydebank. It incurred a huge expense to me due to me being unemployed at the moment and then they didn't even have the decency to inform me within an acceptable time scale. I like to think that the reason i did not get the job was because being a Skye man i might be too honest for an organisation such as this. Why do i reckon this, because the job is still being advertised, if they have found a more suitable candidate why has he/she not started in the job yet. After reading your site and letters i can see that i have had a lucky escape.

It's great to see some employees from Arnie's with they're views, i know through personal experience that it is rarely service staff that are at fault with any repairs not being carried out. All mechanics i know want a customer to get a car with a "clean bill of health", one that is roadworthy. I've seen many arguments within dealerships between sales staff/management and service staff on just exactly what should be done to a car. According to management/sales staff profit is more important then safety and to service staff safety is the number 1 priority, after all which mechanic wants to work on and sign off a car in his name that he knows to be a death trap just because that sales/management staff want to earn a couple of more quid.

In my previous job in Fort William we were fortunate not to have an AC dealership in the locality but unfortunately there were some customers of his. When faults appeared in his cars they were given permission to visit us and get the work checked out. It was up to us to get an order number for work from Arnie, i could never believe half the things i heard. Parts were not to be replaced with genuine examples, the cheapest of the cheap would do.

Sales reps for Arnie, now they were great, Arnie had loads of promotions to encourage all dealerships to buy from him (parts sales). Unfortunately these promotional gifts never seemed to appear.

All i have see on the site does not surprise me, i think all should buy from a local, honest, independent franchised dealership. It is the only way to change things, we all have the power to change what is happening. I believe that a dealership can be honest and genuine, caring to they're customers, give they're customers a good deal and what they want and still return a profit. All we need is a wee bit of honesty and fair trade in the motor industry and i know that any dealership that is willing to do that will put a big dent into Arnie's profits. 24.10.2003

a few years ago i bought a car from Arnold Clark and after a few days an
intermittent fault developed whereby the car would cut out or lose power...took
the car in every day on my way home and eventually contacted the judge at the
Sunday mail who was very helpful!!!!!i was immediately offered another
car, coffee, Easter eggs etc...the funniest thing that happened was that one day
the managers chair broke and there were hundreds of snotters stuck to the
underside of it, he was Alan **** .i remember
him telling me the fault was a feature of the car, would rather have had a sun
roof. don't think it helped that my trade in car had died on its new owners.. 26.10.2003

i bought a Volkswagen passat for Arnold Clark only 3 months ago in mount veron
Glasgow. the radio didn't work so they said they needed to de-code however they
would need the car for the full day to take it to a Volkswagen dealer in crow
road, thinking about this is said i would take the car myself, however this was
frowned at, however they then decided that i could take the car to a local auto
shop 5 minutes away and they sorted the radio within i hour, the next problem is
that i now need a new feeder cylinder pipe, but amazingly is not covered in the
warranty, but could have the work carried out for a small fortune. the moral of
this is thats to your sight i got the part from verve and had my own mechanic to fit
it, therefore staying away from cowboys. 29.10.2003
